El 7 de septiembre de 1985, un grupo de profesionales en educación inició un nuevo proyecto educativo en la ciudad de Villahermosa: El Colegio Americano de Tabasco. La visión que lo impulsaba consistía en ofrecer una alternativa de educación continua, integral y humanística centrada en el alumno, para formar al hombre íntegro, capaz de desarrollar un pensamiento analítico y crítico, dentro de un ambiente de respeto y libertad.
La conjunción de ideas, esfuerzos y recursos del grupo concretaron la apertura del Jardín de Niños, el que inició sus actividades con 29 niños, en una casa ubicada en el centro de la ciudad, la que se convirtió en la sede de sus primeras instalaciones. El cuerpo docente fundador estaba integrado por las siguientes personas:

La innovación educativa, el trato directo, amable y entusiasta de este grupo de mujeres profesionales lograron el beneplácito de los padres de familia. El éxito alcanzado se reflejó en la demanda de espacios y en el crecimiento del proyecto, un año después de su apertura, las instalaciones se trasladan a la Colonia Atasta , también de manera provisional, ya que es hasta septiembre de 1989 (durante el ciclo escolar 1989-1990) que se inauguran los primeros edificios en el lugar que hoy se ubica esta institución. Los primeros edificios construidos corresponden a las instalaciones, que hoy ocupa el Jardín de Niños y que en aquel entonces, fueron ocupados provisionalmente por la Primaria. En 1986 se funda la primaria, desde esa fecha y hasta el día de hoy la directora es la Lic. Aura Leticia Lanz Villegas.
In 1990, the first stage of the Elementary School is built, allowing Kinder Garden to move to the new premises, with this, we were able to have all the levels in one site. Every year after that, new classrooms or other educational spaces have been built, Laboratories, libraries, workshops, sports facilities, etc. Jr. High School, under the leadership of Ms. Marisela Heredia Escobar opens its doors in 1991. Three years later, in 1994, Ms. Heredia starts the High School.

Our School is characterized for its search for educational excellence, for this reason, Colegio Americano has established different agreements of collaboration and consultancy with several well known national institutions e.g. Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), to develop projects geared to develop cognitive skills: Aprender a Pensar (Learn to think), Desarrollo de Habilidades del Pensamiento. On November 27th 2002 an agreement was signed with this institution to offer our staff the possibility to pursue further studies through the Virtual University, and at the same time students and parents of our community have an educational alternative through courses, workshops and conferences broadcasted via satellite or the Internet.

The teaching, clerical and Janitorial staff is made up of 256 people. It is important to mention that up to date 1882 students in 16 generations have finished their kindergarten;1464 students in 13 generations have concluded their Elementary School; 1290 students in 12 Generations have concluded their Junior High School and 879 students in 9 Generations have concluded their High School.
